Something Hot to Drink

Enjoy your coffee or tea guilt-free. Here’s why.

Many people have trouble functioning in the morning without their daily dose of coffee or tea. While tea has a reputation of being healthy, coffee, on the other hand, has been on the pendulum for years regarding its health benefits. Associated with anxiety, heartburn, and high blood pressure, is coffee good for you or not? The current opinion says the good outweighs the bad, which has coffee drinkers around the world rejoicing.

Besides warming you up on a cold day, here are five reasons why you should drink one, two, or five cups of coffee or tea every day and not feel guilty about it.

Reason 1: Heart Health

Coffee is now considered a good thing for your heart unless you’ve suffered heart problems in the past or currently have high blood pressure. Folks who drink several cups a day have a lower risk of stroke, heart rhythm problems, heart disease, and heart failure. These benefits are attributed to the high content of antioxidants found in coffee, which work to reduce inflammation in the blood and ward off disease. Antioxidants are substances that prevent or put an end to cell damage caused by oxidants (free radicals that harm your cells).

Green tea is a particularly powerful weapon against heart disease, heart attack, and stroke as it helps improve blood flow and relax your arteries. So drink up!

Reason 2: Type 2 Diabetes Prevention

Numerous studies have shown a connection between tea, decaf coffee, and caffeinated coffee consumption and a reduced risk of type 2 diabetes. In fact, it has been found that every cup of coffee you drink may reduce your risk for type 2 diabetes by seven percent. Coffee and tea are both high in powerful antioxidants that protect against disease. In addition, coffee is rich in chromium and magnesium, two minerals that assist with insulin regulation and the body’s ability to control blood-sugar levels.

Reason 3: Reduced Risk of Dementia

The chances of losing your memory and developing Alzheimer’s disease increase as you age, but drink coffee or tea and your risk may go down. One study showed that those who drink three to five cups of coffee a day have a 65 percent lower risk of dementia and Alzheimer’s compared with those who don’t drink coffee. Drink green, black, or oolong tea every day and reduce your risk by 50 percent. You can thank the potent antioxidants and anti-inflammatory compounds found in coffee and tea that work to protect the brain’s nerves and blood vessels.

Reason 4: Protection Against Parkinson’s

The more coffee you drink the lower your chance of developing Parkinson’s disease. Drink four or five cups a day and slash your risk by 50 percent. It’s the caffeine found in coffee that seems to protect against the disease and help control your movements. Black tea, because of its higher caffeine content, has also shown some level of protection against Parkinson’s, though not as substantial as coffee.

Reason 5: Promote Liver Health

Drinking coffee is also associated with a healthier liver. High consumption has shown to decrease your risk of liver cancer by 40 percent and liver cirrhosis by 66 percent. The reasons for this are debatable, but it is likely due to coffee’s high antioxidant content. Regardless of the reasons why, the cause is clear, so drink your coffee with confidence!
